WEEKEND COURSES
Travel Photography -
Shooting quality travel pictures involves a sense of place. How do you translate that sense to the reader?
What is the framework for a good travel story or just a good set of travel images? This course looks at the
structure and art to creating consistently intriguing travel images. We will introduce techniques for achieving
better street documentation and give you the skills and practice to successfully capture a different culture or
location. This is a project-based course so students must be prepared to shoot to a brief. Edit and layout will also
be discussed in addition to potential markets and buyers suitable to your photography.
The course evolves to some extent around participants, as we encourage you to bring in work you have already shot.
Apart from photographic style we also look at equipment, the transport of equipment, potential legal issues, insurance
and what you might need to be covered for, working in different climates and how to look after your equipment in
varying conditions.
Usually for the second session we decide as a group on a (London or not far from London, UK-based location where all will
be challenged to push their travel photography skills based on what we have covered in Session 1 and in preparation for where
we are headed in Session 3 - hands-on story-editing and presentation.
Our suggested location suggested location for the March Travel Photography course is Whipsnade Zoo, but this will be discussed and agreed with the group in Session 1.
Saturdays, new dates for July/August to be confirmed due to filming in Africa! 10am-1pm, 3 sessions, £335 per person.
SPECIAL COURSE FOR OASIS OVERLAND Crash Travel Photography
Shooting quality travel pictures involves a sense of place. How do you translate that sense to the reader?
Beginner Digital Photography
Taking pictures but struggling to understand why you’re not getting what you want? Your owner’s manual reads like a foreign textbook? Learn photographic terminology which will give meaning to terms such as shutter speed, aperture, white balance, depth of field, focal length, jpeg and raw files, resolution, etc. With definitions understood, the course moves around each of these technical terms and employs practical exercises to explore the successful use of them. At the end of 4 weeks (or 4 sessions) you will know where to find and how to use your camera’s settings for creative effect. And you will have a collection of your own short photography projects to prove it!

Photography for Teens
Digital cameras are as common as mobile phones and to produce good photographic results you need to know how to use them. From photographing friends to creating eye-catchy compositions this course will provide you with the basic skills to make your photography begin to stand out from the rest. You can use these courses as a Skill for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. Just let us know when you book, as you will need enough sessions to make the DoE requirement.
This course provides a fun approach to learning the basic settings on cameras, either digital SLR or compact cameras (participants will need to provide their own cameras - please phone us if you have any questions). Teens will learn how to use different settings for creative effect, how to set a correct exposure in different modes and for various uses, and we will begin exploring how to create strong images as well as unusual pictures with these techniques. We will use a visual treasure hunt to explore what makes a strong picture (composition) and we discover how different perspectives, angles and camera techniques make photography exciting! We will also look at editing images on the computer, with many an amusing side to it! By the end of the four sessions Teens should feel they know the beginnings of a new craft.
Each participant will receive a custom print of their chosen image shot over the course, and an edited photographic “creation”.
Saturdays, 2pm-3.30pm (WEEKEND)
Starts 24 March (31 Mar, 14 Apr, 21 Apr) *EASTER weekend: no class on 7 April.
Starts 28 April (12 May, 19 & 26 May). *Bank holiday weekend: no class on 5 May.
Starts 23 June (30 June, 7 July, 14 July).

During term-time courses with groups of friends can be arranged and tailored to suit revision & exam time where possible. If you need to take a break let us know and we just continue when you are ready and progress with the material from where we left off. Please contact us if you are interested in this option.
Advanced Photography for Teens
This course is aimed at Teens who have already mastered the basic settings on their cameras (such as exposure using shutter speed, aperture & ISO, use of white balance, metering and file sizes. They should feel relatively confident photographing in Shutter /Aperture priority and using Manual mode) and now want to progress to create professional-style images using more advanced techniques. We will introduce you to lighting techniques using your on-camera flash but also show you how a simple light system can dramatically raise the bar of your photography skills!
This course can be used as a Skill for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
Course requirement: Camera - DSLR or compact with Tv/S and Av/A and M programme modes.
Saturdays, 4-5.30pm

Introduction to Wedding Photography
Digital photography has made access into wedding photography easier than ever. Increased numbers of amateur photographers in the market means increased competition. A common trending question amongst serious amateurs is, how do I transform shooting weddings as a favour for friends into a viable creative business? Using this as a point of entry we examine establishing value in a saturated marketplace. We discuss both creative and practical expectations of being in business from issues around meeting the client to getting the assignment and achieving a successful product.
We discuss business models, negotiating, pricing, add on services and more. The class will also take into account your personal style and expand on polishing a visual aesthetic.
Guests from the wedding industry will contribute to class discussion.
